PREPEARING FOR RETIREMENT
Nigeria’s corporate workforce is ageing, and for most senior professionals, pension and gratuity alone do not replace the income, structure or sense of purpose that a career provided. Many executives reach the final years before retirement having built deep professional expertise, but with little deliberate preparation for the financial, entrepreneurial, psychological and family transitions that retirement brings.
The Lagos Business School (LBS), Business Innovation Accelerator (BIA) exists to develop impact driven entrepreneurs for national transformation, by providing high-quality entrepreneurship training and empowerment to Nigerians nationwide. This mandate puts BIA in a strong position to treat retirement not as a full stop, but as a transition that can be planned for, funded and, turned into a new opportunity to refire for impact.
About the Programme
Preparing for Retirement: Refiring for the next phase” is a four-day, faculty-led pre-retirement programme delivered through a hybrid model at Lagos Business School. It brings together LBS faculty across finance, strategy and entrepreneurship to work with participants on the practical and personal sides of leaving full-time corporate life. Sessions combine short faculty-led lectures, case discussion and structured personal-planning exercises.
This programme is for:
- Corporate executives and managers are seriously considering leaving employment to start a business.
- Professionals are already running a side business who wants to formalise the move to full-time.
- Organisations that want to offer a structured career-transition or exit benefit to staff.
Programme Objective
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
- Apply a structured framework to decide whether, and when, to leave employment for a business.
- Validate a business idea and draft a first version of its business model.
- Identify realistic financing options and build a personal financial runway for the transition.
- Separate personal and business finances and plan for the early cash-flow gap.
- Draw lessons directly from founders who have made the same transition.
